Tiye Salgado Swabey: OEA intern summer 2025

Tiye made a fantastic contribution by writing up the output from an event that we ran to help teachers do biology fieldwork in their own school grounds.

I am studying for a BSc in Biological Sciences (Plant Science) at the University of Edinburgh.

I am interested in regenerative agriculture, agroecology and plant health and immunity. I would like to apply my plant science background to address food security and climate change challenges by developing pathogen and climate resilient, high-yielding crops. Aside from my studies, I helped establish Emergent Generation - a network of young people advocating for a just transition to more sustainable food and farming systems.

I first worked with Kim whilst at The Cherwell School in Oxford, assessing the sustainability and biodiversity of the school site and planting hundreds hedge plants and trees! We are now working on a number of different projects together, mostly focussed around advocating for nature-based education in the school curriculum which has been shown to be hugely beneficial for student and teacher wellbeing and biodiversity.
